It doesn’t seem like many people are posting reports lately. I’ve been kind of lax myself in posting. The fishing has been on and off but I have been catching a few nice fish. Last week I did another three-day camping trip, which just happened to fall on the coldest nights thus far this year. I had Charles and his son Mat from Tennessee to do some kayak fishing. We ended up camping on one of the backcountry sites, as it was to windy and rough to stay on one of the barrier islands which I usually prefer.

First day was cold, windy and overcast. We fished in the lee on a few islands in the bay near our camp and actually caught a few nice snook and some trout. I caught one trout that was close to 5lbs.

Day 2 was to be different. After a cold night the sun came out and if was a beautiful day when it warmed up. I decided to take the guys into a creek that is known for the snook fishing that was near our camp. The surrounding waters were real low and only a couple of skiffs managed to make it there during the course of the day, so we pretty much had the place to ourselves. On the way through we each caught a couple of snook and after going all the way through we were faced with no water so had lunch and headed back. On our way the snook seemed to be everywhere and after getting to a good place to throw the long rods it was non-stop action for the guys till dark. I fished my way out and I was catching fish anywhere I threw. I would have to estimate that over thirty snook were landed with as many being lost or cutoff. What an awesome day!

I had the stew cooking by the time the guys made it back to the camp. I think they would have stayed in the creek if they didn’t run out of flies. After a warm meal and fish stories it was off to bed looking forward to the next day.

Day 3 You know where the guys were going. We were catching trout from the campsite when they decided to kayak and head back in. It was not going off like the previous day but they managed a few more nice snook. I split up and went exploring for reds on some shallow flats to site fish. I managed to only find one small group of reds and was able to catch one. It was another great day.
This was one of those trips where I didn’t have high expectations on catching many fish and was blown away with how great it turned out. These guys went from never catching a snook before to a memory of all the many that they caught camping in the Everglades.
A couple of pics from the trip:
